ITI: Interactive Technologies Incorporated

This company has the largest market share in the wireless security industry for homes and small/medium businesses.

  • Introduced usability to the company
  • Designed custom usability processes for ITI that fit ITI processes and goals
  • Trained development teams in doing usability
  • Ran numerous usability tests that directly contributed to market leadership and business success
  • Helped integrate usability into this company's development process

Heuristic Review and Review System (April 1995)
Called in to provide fast turnaround assistance with the interface of this company’s next-generation flagship product, which integrates voice, LED display, custom keypads and telephone to run a complete security and automation system for homes and small businesses from any location (with up to 64 zones in the commercial system). Introduced usability and started training the team by facilitating a heuristic evaluation. Created an ITI heuristic review guidebook for future reviews.

Product Usability Tests and Usability Testing System (May 1995)
Introduced usability testing to this team and company by running usability tests, while simultaneously training the team and others in usability testing. Created a customized ITI usability testing handbook. Total elapsed time to turn around this product’s interface quality and developer capabilities: About 5 weeks elapsed time with about 2 weeks of billable days. Within three months new users could succeed in 1 or 2 tries with any of the system’s 36 core features. With that achieved, the usability focus shifted to using multiple features to perform complex tasks.

Accelerated Usability Tests and Accelerated Testing System (Sept. 1995)
In this team’s next phase it needed the ability to test quickly in numerous focused areas. Ran tests and taught teams to run "point tests" that increase capacity by facilitating their simultaneous running of two 2-day usability tests at a time. Created a customized handbook for accelerated point tests.

Low-Fidelity Usability Tests and Low-Fi Testiing System (October 1995)
A new product development team was chartered with delivering the interface for a mass market product within 6 weeks. After 2 weeks of requirements and specs, facilitated a paper interface design/test. Simultaneously facilitated the test, trained the team in rapid low-fi iterative tests and created a customized handbook. Worked with this team on 3 more tests within 3 weeks, finishing an effective interface and product design on-time and on-budget.

Documentation Usability Tests and Documentation Testing System (Jan. 1996)
Introduced documentation usability testing to the documentation department by facilitating the usability test of a new product’s documentation. Created a customized documentation inspection / testing system. Facilitated the documentation usability tests, trained the documentation team in usability testing and provided a customized documentation testing handbook.

Training Performance Assessment System (Dec. - April 1996)
Introduced user performance testing to the training department. Assessed training processes, determined measurement needs, developed outcome metrics, created a customized assessment process and handbook. Successfully implemented by a select group of "previously trained" ITI developers. Training classes now measure trainee performance before the end of class, then adjust the final module to provide assured delivery of targeted skills. After-class assessments now iteratively improve course designs, with improvements tested with fast turnaround prior to the next class taught, to produce assured trainee success.

Performance-Based Beta Testing System (May 1996)
Within the first month of a nationwide beta test, learns the real user performance for the top 30 to 40 user and performance requirements for a product with a user performance architecture of 4 weekly beta cycles (installation, initial use, expanded use and performance modifications wanted). Confirms that these components of the system are effective and can be released for production. For critical or major user performance problems, identifies the details of problems so they can be fixed before release.
